Rustic Frosting Technique - Video

Hey there everyone!  I hope you are all enjoying this lovely Christmas season.  Just this morning it started snowing here.  With the stockings hung on the mantle, tree lights twinkling, and the smell of cake coming from the oven, it really feels like Christmas.  But you didn't come here to read about my weather report.  You came here for cake.  I have a surprise for you today.  I made a little video for you.  Nothing fancy, but hopefully helpful.

Cakes with a rustic frosting application have become very popular these days.  Sometimes the texture runs horizontally, vertically, even diagonally.  Here are some examples from the web.

Vertical Texture

Horizontal Texture

Diagonal Texture

I used this frosting technique on my Chocoholics cake.
I love how the textured tiers contrast with the smooth tier.

Are you ready to watch me in action?  I intentionally left the video in real time.  Yes, I move slowly.  Do what works for you.

I  am using my all time favorite frosting spatula.  Different sized spatulas would give a slightly different effect.  Experiment with your tools and find your favorite.

Time to go get my cake out of the oven and get back to watching the snow. Thanks for stopping by.

  1. What kind of icing is it? How thick is the icing?

    1. I used a basic chocolate buttercream. This technique can be done with just about any decorators icing. I like the thickness to be a little soft for making roses, but stiff enough for a shell border. Hope that helps.
